For a plumbing or HVAC shop, two numbers drive the insurance bill: your workers' comp rate and your experience mod. TrueSpan Group brings 12 years of claims leadership in workers' comp, general liability, and commercial auto to help Kansas City and Lee's Summit contractors control both, then places the account with carriers that actually want trade work.

No two shops carry the same exposure. We build the program around:
We work with plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical contractors across Kansas City, Lee's Summit, and the surrounding Missouri and Kansas metro, from owner-operators to shops running 30 employees.
If you run a $500K to $5M shop with 3 to 30 employees, you are the account large agencies hand to a service center and small agencies quote with one carrier. We do neither.
Most plumbing and HVAC programs are built from the same core pieces. Final terms always depend on the carrier, your state, and underwriting.
Usually the largest premium line for a trade contractor. We review class codes, payroll splits, and your experience mod at every renewal, because misclassified payroll is one of the most common overcharges in this class.
Covers third-party injury and property damage from your work, including completed operations. For plumbers, water damage after the job is the claim that matters most, so we read the exclusions before you bind.
Covers service vans and trucks, plus hired and non-owned auto when employees drive their own vehicles to a job. We match limits to what your GC contracts and lenders require.
Blanket additional insured, waiver of subrogation, and primary and non-contributory wording are standard asks on commercial jobs. We confirm the policy actually carries them before a certificate goes out.
Inland marine coverage for tools, diagnostic gear, and parts on the truck or at the job site, which a standard property policy often limits once it leaves your shop.
Contractors pollution liability for mold, sewage, and refrigerant releases that many GL forms exclude, plus umbrella limits when larger contracts require $2M or more.
Most agencies re-quote your renewal with whatever carrier they have and call it done. We start with your loss runs, payroll, and contracts, then take the account to markets that want trade work. We have sat on the claims side of the desk, and that changes how we build your program.
James Roberts spent 12 years in claims leadership managing workers' comp, general liability, and commercial auto. We know which claims drive your mod and how to keep small ones from becoming big ones.
We check your mod worksheet, class codes, and payroll allocation at every renewal. An error in any of them can cost a contractor thousands a year.
Send us the GC agreement before you sign. We flag insurance requirements your current policy does not meet, so you find out before the job instead of after a claim.
As an independent agency we work with standard carriers and specialty contractor markets, so your account goes to an underwriter that wants your class instead of being forced onto one carrier.
Bring your current declarations, your experience mod worksheet, and three to five years of loss runs. One review usually shows whether you are overpaying on comp or carrying gaps your contracts do not allow.

Straight answers to what contractors ask us most.
Most need general liability, workers' compensation, and commercial auto at minimum. Tools and equipment coverage, an umbrella, and contractors pollution liability are common additions, and many commercial contracts require them.
In Missouri, construction industry employers, which includes plumbing and HVAC contractors, must carry workers' compensation once they have one employee. In Kansas, most employers must carry it once gross annual payroll exceeds $20,000. Owners can often exclude themselves, but general contractors frequently require proof of coverage anyway.
It depends on the policy. Resulting damage to a customer's property is generally covered under completed operations, but the cost to redo your own faulty work usually is not, and some forms limit or exclude mold and water damage. We read those exclusions before you bind, because water damage is one of the most common plumbing claims.
Your experience modification rate compares your workers' comp losses to other contractors in your class. A 1.00 is average. A 0.85 mod reduces your premium by about 15 percent, and a 1.25 adds about 25 percent. Frequent small claims often hurt a mod more than one large claim, which is why claims management matters.
Most commercial general contractors require both, plus primary and non-contributory wording. Many contractor policies can include these on a blanket basis, but not all do, and some charge extra. We confirm the endorsements are actually on the policy before issuing a certificate.
It depends on payroll, revenue, class codes, loss history, vehicles, and your experience mod. Workers' comp is usually the largest piece. The fastest route to an accurate number is a review of your current policies, payroll by class, and five years of loss runs.
